Boat Restoration:How to Properly Restore a Boat

Have you recently stumbled across a great deal on a boat that simply needs some TLC and a little restoration? If so, then hopefully you took advantage of that deal and purchased the boat. Before you will be able to take your new boat out on the open water, however, there are some steps that you will want to follow to restore the boat so that it not only looks like new but runs great as well. Here are a few things that any boat owner can do to restore an older or slightly damaged boat.

Clean
The first thing that you should do is to give the boat a deep cleaning inside and out. This can be done in your driveway, a parking lot, or any open and relatively level area. Start by soaping and spraying down the exterior of the boat with a strong hose or pressure washer to get rid of caked on dirt or debris that has been there for an extended period of time. You should thoroughly clean the entire boat inside and out before completing any kind of restorative work, especially on a fiberglass boat.

Wax
If the boat is fiberglass and its exterior is in relatively good shape aside from some small amounts of rust and wear, you can renew its appearance with a thorough application of fiberglass wax. This will not only restore the appearance of the boat but will also protect it from further damage. Be sure to buy a wax that is specifically designed for fiberglass and use a microfiber rag to apply the product without scratching the paint or remainder of the exterior surface. A finishing coat of polish on top will give the boat a like-new appearance.

Repair Rust and Oxidation
Over time, rust and oxidation commonly occur to boats due to their exposure to water and minerals or pollutants within the water. If the boat has become oxidized or has rust on it, you can repair these areas by gently sanding away the rust while being careful to take as little paint off the boat as possible. Once the rust is gone, apply new paint to the area to mask the repair.

As you can see, there are a number of ways that you can go about restoring any boat to make it look like new once again without spending a lot of money in the process.
