Why to Use Marine Spray Paint

So once you’ve painted both your topside and bottomside, and your boat looks great, why would you ever need to use a marine spray paint? Remember- there’s not just a hull on your boat. Your boat also has mechanical parts that need a coating to protect and maintain their integrity. Marine spray paint makes this process much easier.

Marine spray paint is commonly used to apply antifouling layers to engine parts, propellers and outdrives. The fact that the paint is already mixed in a spray media just makes it easier to apply to smaller mechanical areas. It also allows you to spray these parts without ruining the rest of your new paint job. Finally, a spray paint media makes applications so easy that you can maintain these coatings more often than you can repaint your whole boat. Since these coatings take a lot of abuse and are often moving pieces, repainting of these surfaces is common once or twice a year to prevent wear and tear.

Remember there are key differences between marine paint and regular house paint. The same applies to regular spray paint and marine spray paint. You simply cannot spray paint your overdrive or engine components with a household spray paint.

Marine spray paint contains plasticizers that prevent the paint from flaking off after a few days of use. Most marine spray paint also comes with UV protection, which is critical since many of the mechanical components can spend equal amounts of time in the water and outside of the water. Protecting them from sunlight using a marine spray paint keeps the parts from drying out, rusting and corroding.

Marine spray paint also comes with heightened abrasion resistance, which simply means it doesn’t scratch as easily as normal spray paint. With the amount of metal and tools on most boats, this is essential to keeping your surfaces looking their best and protecting them from accidental dings, nicks, and scratches.

Every boater knows that boating exposes their boats and engines to extreme temperature changes. Most metals flex and change over time as well as temperature changes. A metal in the dead of winter will be a different size than a metal in the summer on the water. Marine spray paints are specially designed to withstand these temperature changes. Without this intrinsic to the marine paint, you’ll find that paint will crack and even fall off with the shifts of size and temperature of the metal.

What happens if you don’t coat your marine parts with the proper marine spray paint? Without a coating of protection, you run the risk of corrosion, especially in your propeller and overdrive areas that are exposed to the water quite a bit during boating expeditions. Corrosion can spell disaster for your engine components, and may even lead to you needing a complete replacement. A much cheaper solution is to maintain these parts with a coat of marine paint spray, and you’ll find that your mechanical boating pieces last longer and run better over the years.
